The Prophet of Grunwald - Session 8 - What Waits in the Tunnels?

Image
As the party stood against him, Father Manfred summoned impressive glowing aetheric armor about himself with a prayer of protection. Yuric tried (with an impressive lack of success) to subdue the priest with his own hammer, succeeding mostly in swinging the weapon enthusiastically at nothing. Olesya managed to defuse the situation -- at least somewhat -- by convincing Yuric to drop the hammer and Father Manfred that they did not wish to attack him. Father Manfred recovered his hammer when it flew from the floor directly into his hand. He then questioned Olesya, Yuric, and Berrend. Hearing of Hellhounds and the dismembered corpses, he asked to be taken to the evidence. The party guided him to the Lebziak house, where the rotting corpse of the vicious dogs remained, along with the hole in the wall, and the gruesome collection of body parts. Although he dismissed the identification of the dogs as hellhounds, Manfred seemed to confirm the action of the forces of Chaos in this slaugh

River Warden Jaromir brought the companions into the Red Orc and began interrogating them, although his bluster was cut short by Olesya's glare (and a sudden drop in temperature). He revealed that he had ordered the port closed and a search for the beast that had slain the Lebziak family would begin shortly. He also admitted he was seriously undermanned and extracted an offer of assistance from Olesya. It also came to light that the entire crew of the ferry that brought Yuric to town had been slaughtered on the river -- apparently by the same beast. Olesya sought more information and asked Jaromir to bring her to a library. He suggested the personal library of Viktor Carro , one of the town's prominent citizens (and a former mayor who, Jaromir reports, wishes to be mayor again). The Carro home stood right next to the Red Orc facing the town square (and was, Yuric remembered, the house Stephanie Grasserman had tried to go to for shelter when she was separated from her family

Despite River Warden Jaromir's instructions, everyone had somewhere else to go other than the Red Orc. Olesya made her way to Marina the Apothecary to get some treatment for her wounds. Although they were well tended and bound, the Barber Surgeon Vyacheslav warned her such bites could well become infected with disease and to keep a watchful eye on it. Olesya agreed to and warned them that the bite may have come from an unnatural creature. The three also discussed the state of the town. On her way, Olesya observed both a loud crowd pushing toward the port and that several Kislevites were posted discreetly to guard her people's quarter. Two much more obvious guards watched the Apothecary's home. Marina informed her that the story was that Rosabella -- the sickly daughter of the countess -- had been cured by the Voice of Sigmar. Marina feared that she and Vyacheslav might face some retribution since they had previously tried (and failed) to effect a cure. Olesya, Mari

The ill-tempered hounds dealt with, Olesya, Siegfried, Yuric, and Berend investigated the inside of the Lebziak home. On the ground floor, they investigated the destruction of the family's common room. Berend was able to discern large gashes (as from huge talons) in the room as well as tracks of a sort leading to and from the smashed window and the river. Although not entirely free of blood, there was markedly less than one might expect if a slaughter had occurred there. Upstairs, however, the whole party found plentiful evidence of just such a slaughter -- in one of the bedrooms was a grisly pile of human remains (including the severed limbs of several children and adults). Although the pile was putrefying, as best as Berend and Siegfried could tell, these chunks had been dragged up here by the hounds. The sight of such carnage weighed on all the party. Olesya expressed her grief and shock, while the others internalized theirs (although Siegfried did expel his most recent

Following up on Stephanie Grasserman's account of her night on the run, Olessia, Berend, Yuric, and Siegfried went to investigate the Ferry Terminal building and the nearby home of the River Warden Garald Lebziak  and his family. Stephanie had reported hiding in the Terminal until "something horrible" happened at the Lebziak home and she fled. On the way from the Red Orc to the Terminal, the party noted that the Countess and her daughter remained aboard the Hammer (since the guards and carriage remained in place and the common people were still lining up to await a service). The Ferry Terminal was notable only in that it was utterly unoccupied. Although Olessia and Siegfried both attempted a thorough search, they uncovered no specific clues or signs of Stephanie having hidden there. Certainly, there were plenty of places she could have hidden, however. Unbeknownst to her companions, Olessia also gazed at the terminal with her Magic Sense but saw nothing unusual.

The search for Stephanie Grassermann continued. While Siegfried, Yuric, Berend, and Ploog undertook the search of the Hammer, Olessia met with Marina Ryabov , an apothecary who serves as one of the unofficial leaders of the Kislevite community in Grunwald. Marina and her husband (the barber-surgeon  Vyacheslav ) enjoyed good relations with the powers-that-be in the town and had opened their home to Kislevite children whose parents feared more vandalism. Their conversation was cut short when Marina received word that Countess Greta von Webern  (ruler of Grunwald and the surrounding county) was making her way by carriage to the town's port. Along with many other curious Grunwalders, Olessia and Marina followed the carriage's progress as armed guards cleared a way down to the harbor. Siegfried, Yuric, and Berend had finished their business aboard the Hammer when the countess's carriage arrived at the harbor, shortly after midday. Reunited with Olessia, they all watch

The search for Stephanie Grasserman began in earnest. Siegfried and Yuric pressed some of their local contacts to see if anyone saw the girl the night of the rioting at the Red Orc. They picked up no specific information, Yuric learned that more vandalism and marching happened in the Kislevite quarter and that some members of the community are keeping their children with the Apothecary, a community leader. Olessia, although she spent time tending to her community, did pass on that she suspected Stephanie might be held aboard The Hammer, the riverboat which brought the Voice of Sigmar adherents to Grunwald. Meanwhile, Ploog visited his cousin Hoibur Ironhammer , the town blacksmith, to obtain some arms for the search. Liking the irony, Hoibur loaned Ploog a warhammer (a Sigmarite symbol). Ploog then took some leather armor and readied himself. Berend made a very large show of trying to track the girl and when Olessia's suggestion came to light, made an even bigger show of
