The Prophet of Grunwald - Session 5 - Human Remains

The ill-tempered hounds dealt with, Olesya, Siegfried, Yuric, and Berend investigated the inside of the Lebziak home.

On the ground floor, they investigated the destruction of the family's common room. Berend was able to discern large gashes (as from huge talons) in the room as well as tracks of a sort leading to and from the smashed window and the river. Although not entirely free of blood, there was markedly less than one might expect if a slaughter had occurred there.

Upstairs, however, the whole party found plentiful evidence of just such a slaughter -- in one of the bedrooms was a grisly pile of human remains (including the severed limbs of several children and adults). Although the pile was putrefying, as best as Berend and Siegfried could tell, these chunks had been dragged up here by the hounds.

The sight of such carnage weighed on all the party. Olesya expressed her grief and shock, while the others internalized theirs (although Siegfried did expel his most recent meal). Clamping down on this shock created a small crack in their sanity (surely nothing to worry about just yet).

Yuric also shared with his companions that on his way into Grunwald something had torn apart the crew of the ferry. The river wardens were aware, apparently, but had yet to take much action.

Another room upstairs housed a fourth hound, this one deceased and maggot-ridden. Its putrifaction (and that of the human remains) did not match how recent the various tracks were in the building, leading Olesya and Yuric to conclude that the dark gods of rot and pestilence might be playing a part.

A search of the cellar revealed nothing out of the ordinary (although Berend and Siegfried liberated several bottles of wine just in case). On the ground floor, Yuric and Siegfried also found some silverware interesting enough to stash in their packs.

As Olesya ill-advisedly shouted something about dark gods back into the house, River Warden Jaromir Weimerer arrived on site and demanded to know what was happening. Siegfried (anxious to preserve a friendly relationship with a river warden) led Jaromir inside and showed him the grisly fate of the Lebziak family. Clearly shocked, Jaromir ordered the party back to the Red Orc -- making clear they had better be there when he came to question them further.

In the meantime, Jaromir had to go about closing the port.
